Environmental Impact

We have a clear plan to become more energy efficient, reduce our carbon footprint, and protect the environment. We are proud to be ranked globally in 2023 as a Clean200™ company and as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for seven times.

Net-zero GHG targets

We have committed to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 and to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030*.

We will meet our commitments through a robust, four-point plan:

  • Increase energy efficiencies across our operations, network, and data centres
  • Transition our fleet to electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Expand our renewable energy strategy
  • Engage suppliers to set their own science-based targets

We submitted our targets to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) at the end of 2022.

*2019 established as the baseline year for both 2030 and 2050 targets; reduction targets specific to Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions

Environmental programs

We run a number of environmental programs.

Our electronic waste management program diverts devices and equipment from landfills, while our certified pre-owned device program recycles, refurbishes and recycles phones.

We have upgraded and retrofitted many of our facilities, including developing energy efficient data centres. We also partner with communities to develop solar and wind-powered cell towers.

Biodiversity

We support responsible procurement practices across our operations.

Our efforts include reducing water consumption, maintaining a no pesticide policy at facilities, diverting hazardous materials from landfills, and planting trees to offset carbon emissions.

Since partnering with Tree Canada in 2021, we have planted 24,000 trees and offset approximately 750 tonnes of carbon. As part of our employee recognition program, we plant one tree for every employee reaching specific employment milestones.

Circularity

Product end-of-life management

As one of Canada’s largest telecommunications company, we have a critical role to play in recycling communications devices like mobile phones to help ensure they are diverted from landfills.

In promotion of the circular economy, we are also committed to decommissioning end-of-life wireless infrastructure which includes assisting with network equipment migration, de-provisioning, power-off, physical removal and disposal of equipment.
